Headshots

2014. Playing Victor in Four Dogs and a Bone at the Old Fitzroy Theatre, Sydney
“Through slightly erratic gesture and excellent use of tempo and pause, Paul Gerrard makes Victor innocently gullible, charmingly believable, even lovable – a beautiful balance to the three conspirators who are tearing at his bone. (Stage Whispers)

As Creon in Antigone at the Crucible Studio Sheffield, UK
“Paul Gerrard anchors the production. In the space of just seventy minutes he travels seamlessly from assured control to abject collapse.”
(The Times)

2015. In Duck Hunting, King Street Theatre, Sydney
Paul Gerrard as Andy, Craig’s boss, is in equal parts bullying and desperate for affection. (Sydney Scoop)

Michelle De Rosa and Paul Gerrard stand out for their confident embrace of the production’s
offbeat nature to create characters that seem strange on the surface,
while providing firm logic to their respective narratives.

Professional Qualifications and Skills

Bikram Yoga Certified Instructor
Football Association Preliminary Coaching Licence
A.S.A Swimming Teacher and R.L.S.S Life-Saving Teacher
B.A.W.L.A. Fitness Instructor
Published journalist – travel, gemology, theatre, food and wine

Actors who enjoy long careers
are inspired by every facet of their lives.
Teaching yoga helps me to stretch my playing range
and turn posturing on stage to staging a few postures!

Hot, hard and sweaty is great. No, I’m not into porn
but am a devotee of the Bikram variety of yoga.

One of my favourite poets, e.e. cummings, wrote…

nothing can surpass the mystery of stillness

And perhaps the greatest gift that both acting and yoga affords its students
is an appreciation of energised stillness. This interests me greatly because
the connection of mind and body in stillness is a founding principle of good health,
about which I am passionate.

And so give me plenty of access to fellow actors, a stage or a camera,
a director working with rich material, and an occasional yoga studio… and I’m happy.

Artistic influences

The teachings of Stanislavsky and, especially, Michael Chekhov. The writing and ideology of Harold Clurman and Stella Adler. I am inspired by film and theatre that is visually poetic, as well as the writing of the mystics and romantics from Rumi to Yeats. More contemporary influences include film-makers Pedro Almodóvar and, for his emphasis on character, Mike Leigh. For the brilliant and reflective light that her performance art throws on humanity, the late dance choreographer, Pina Bausch.

Living

In Australia. Arriving from London, a clear sky and vivid light illuminated my new world. I loved the vibrant colours of the landscape and the vast stretches of coastline that afforded a bounty of beaches. Having secured work and updated my acting training at NIDA, it wasn’t long before Australia started to feel like home. I currently present a television show, broadcast live from Sydney to the UK, and have recently completed acting in a series of short films, produced in Australia.

Brief Candle Productions

Was co-founded with artist Amanda Collins in 2014. Brief Candle Productions seeks to consistently produce high quality dynamic theatre which engages, illuminates, challenges, provokes and entertains its audiences.
